Mistletoe Injections
The mistletoe plant used in therapy is usually Viscum album, and the injections are often given subcutaneously.
The primary mechanism of this therapy is that it causes a fever.
Fever is a natural immune response that can enhance the activity of immune cells.
The elevated temperature may also stress or weaken cancer cells, which are more vulnerable to heat than healthy cells.
Certain mistletoe extracts contain compounds—mainly mistletoe lectins (MLs) that can directly kill cancer cells. Mistletoe lectins can:
Bind to cell membranes and enter cancer cells.
Disrupt protein synthesis.
Induce apoptosis (programmed cell death), which is often defective in cancer cells.
Mistletoe extract is considered an immunostimulant. It can:
Increase the activity of natural killer (NK) cells, T cells, and macrophages, which help the body recognize and destroy cancer cells.
Stimulate production of cytokines like tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukins, which play roles in immune response and inflammation.
There are currently two brands out there that can be purchased for self administration.
