Why You Might Be Taking Fake Supplements from Amazon
Counterfeit dietary supplements are a growing problem on Amazon, impacting well-known health brands such as NOW Foods, Pure Encapsulations, Host Defense, Prevagen, and PreserVision. To put the scale into perspective, NOW Foods uncovered 11 distinct fraudulent products distributed by a single merchant in April 2023 alone.
What’s inside these fraudulent bottles? In the best-case scenario, you get inert fillers like cornstarch or rice flour—harmless, but completely ineffective. In worse cases, lab tests have detected hidden prescription drugs (including active ingredients found in erectile dysfunction medications), heavy metal contamination, undisclosed allergens, or entirely incorrect compounds. A 2022 investigation into 30 immune-support products purchased on Amazon revealed that 57% were either outright fakes or lacked the ingredients listed on the label.
The Root Cause: Co-Mingled Inventory A primary driver of this issue is Amazon’s standard Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) binning system. When multiple merchants ship the same item to a warehouse, Amazon often groups them together by UPC code rather than keeping each seller’s stock separate.
When an order is placed, warehouse workers pick the item closest to the shipping destination. Consequently, even if you order directly from an official brand storefront or an authorized distributor, you could end up with a counterfeit unit sent in by an unvetted third party. While Amazon signaled plans in late 2024 to phase out shared inventory pooling, inventory mixing remains a factor.
Documented Incidents:
It’s not only supplements; Reports of fake Panacur (fenbendazole)
Lots of people in facebook cancer groups have reported fake Panacur bought from Amazon. This is very concerning and sad. All those people who ended up with fake Panacur in the hopes of treating their cancer.
Even though Amazon has claimed to have resolved this huge problem, we are wary and we’d like to believe the opposite because to make those changes you need an overhaul of the existing system which we don’t believe Amazon will spend the money to fix it because of their greediness in treating their workers (no union, no benefits) but also that they still use 3rd party sellers which will still open the door for counterfeit products.
So we suggest that you use Iherb since they don’t use 3rd party sellers and won’t have this issue or just buy directly from the supplement brand company’s website directly.
