Is Glutamine good or bad for cancer?

Jane McLelland’s protocol is basically using repurposed drugs and natural supplements to block cancer’s 3 main metabolic(feeding) pathways;
Glucose, Glutamine and Fatty Acids.
So her method is to block those pathways.
However, recent research shows that completely starving(blocking) pancreatic cancer of glutamine backfires—it forces tumor cells into an aggressive, treatment-resistant state.
Modern trials are turning that logic on its head: don’t starve the tumor; feed the trap.
In the Phase 1 GlutaPanc study at Cedars-Sinai, researchers saturated advanced pancreatic cancer patients with high-dose oral L-glutamine (30 g/day) alongside standard chemotherapy. The results were striking: median overall survival reached 22 months (compared to historical averages of 8–13 months), with 94% of patients seeing tumor shrinkage.
How the “Trap” Works:
- Sensitizes the Cancer: Flooding the tumor with glutamine forces the cells out of hiding and accelerates their nucleotide synthesis—placing them directly in the path of chemotherapy’s killing mechanism.
- Protects the Patient: Glutamine feeds the intestinal mucosal lining, dampening gut-driven inflammation and helping patients maintain muscle mass so they can tolerate full-dose chemotherapy longer.
- Requires High Doses: Standard 3–5g supplement doses are used up by the gut before ever reaching the tumor. It takes a targeted, high-dose protocol under oncological supervision to saturate the tissue and flip the metabolic switch.
Now you might be asking yourself, what about Glucose and Fatty Acids. Can we do the same with these as in take Glucose or Fatty acids foods to flood the tumor? The answer is no. Here is the why.
Why Glucose Doesn’t Work: “It Pulls the Growth Trigger”
- The Insulin Signal: Glucose is not just a passive nutrient; it comes attached to insulin. When you ingest glucose, the body releases insulin, which acts as a powerful “divide and grow” growth factor for cancer cells.
- Feeds the Engine: Flooding a tumor with glucose doesn’t trick or trap it; it simply turns on cellular growth pathways (like mTOR) and gives the cancer the exact energy surge it needs to multiply and spread.
Why Typical Fatty Acids Don’t Work: “They Build a Shield”
- The Storage Shield: Cancer cells take up standard fats (saturated and monounsaturated fats) and store them safely inside protective droplets. These lipid droplets buffer the tumor against oxidative stress and shield it from being recognized by the immune system.
- The Rare Exception (PUFAs): The only category of fat that can act like a trap is specific polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as omega-3s (EPA). Because PUFAs easily oxidize inside cancer cell membranes, they can trigger a specialized form of iron-driven cell death (ferroptosis). However, this requires very specific conditions and is far more complex than simply eating more fat.
